About the collection

Thank you for your interest in Ocean Alliance’s Digital Media Library. As a non-profit dedicated to the study, conservation, and understanding of whales and the marine environment, Ocean Alliance believes that thoughtful and accurate storytelling can help connect people to whales and inspire a greater appreciation for these animals and the ocean. Ocean Alliance’s photographs, videos, and other digital media help bring the stories of the ocean to audiences around the world.

Ocean Alliance is happy to consider requests from journalists, educators, filmmakers, researchers, non-profits, students, or other groups seeking to use the digital media for educational, scientific, and conservation purposes. The Digital Media Library has been created through years of research and field work, so each request is viewed individually. Ocean Alliance’s goal is to ensure that the images and footage are used accurately, respectfully, and in ways that support the greater understanding of whales and the ocean.

What comes next?

After your application has been reviewed, you will be notified by email of Ocean Alliance’s decision. If your request is approved, you will receive Ocean Alliance Data Use and Media Agreement for review and signature. Once the signed agreement has been returned, Ocean Alliance will provide access to the approved media and any associated materials via email.

As a condition of use, all photos and videos incorporated into research, educational resources, publications, presentations, media productions, software, websites, exhibits, or other derivative works must include appropriate credit to Ocean Alliance and Whale.org. Recommended attribution language will be provided with your approval materials.

Ocean Alliance enjoys learning how the Digital Media Library contributes to new discoveries and creative projects. While not required, Ocean Alliance strongly encourages you to share project updates, publications, presentations, films, educational resources, or other outcomes resulting from your use of the collection. Ocean Alliance loves seeing and hearing how these photos and videos continue to inspire research, conservation, education, and storytelling, and welcomes opportunities to share your work with the team and community.
